Thanks to listener support, Out of the Past: Investigating Film Noiris a featured podcast at iTunes, has generated nearly 200,000 downloads worldwide, and has a per-episode audience of over 4,000. With such a record of success, Clute and Edwards are now able to reach out to a wide range of noir scholars, to use the program as a forum to broaden public discourse on the enduring importance of this distinctively American film style. May's guest is the Czar of Noir, Eddie Muller. Eddie is the Founder and President of the Film Noir Foundation, and the man who organizes the Noir City Film Festival in San Francisco. He is also the author of three superlative studies of film noir (Dark City, Dark City Dames, and The Art of Noir) and two supernal throwback hard-boiled novels (The Distance and Shadow Boxer). Eddie's selection is the 1949 Jules Dassin Film THIEVES' HIGHWAY.

In response to \\\"Case\\\" claiming that I was \\\"hating\\\" on Brute Force. Really? That was \\\"hating?\\\" I greatly admire Brute Force, but am still aware of the screenplay\\\'s contrived shortcomings. If anybody \\\"hated\\\" the film it was Dassin himself, who has never said a good word about it and derided it as simplistic and juvenile. Please don\\\'t ascribe \\\"hating\\\" of films to me as I volunteer a tremendous amount of my time to find and preserve noir films regardless of my personal opinion of their merit. But thanks for pointing out the existence of Criterion\\\'s Brute Force DVD, which had indeed slipped my mind.

Hello! Eddie Muller, (The President of the Film Noir Foundation.) I am \"quite\" sure that you aren\'t \"familiar\" with me, but I am one of the Film Noir Foundation\'s \"biggest cheerleader(s)\" and \"supporter.\" And after reading the \"Noir City Sentinel,\" (July/August issue 2008)... ...Extra...Extra...Here\'s looking at Noir City 7 and hoping that it\'s successful too! Btw, I finally, watched your film \"The Grand Inquisitor,\" starring actresses Marsha Hunt and Leah Dashe. All I can say is...\"Congratulation!\" and will we be looking at a 99 mins film next? Thanks, EM and Clute & Edwards.

Thanks A TrueNoiraholic! We appreciate the kind words about Episode 46. It was a great experience to be able to get Eddie Muller to talk in depth about his favorite film and it added a nice wrinkle to our usual show format. Thanks for listening! And please do watch \"Thieves\' Highway\" right away - you are in for a treat - it is that good! Best, Rich Edwards Co-host, Out of the Past

Hi! I\'d like to correct the statement Mr. Muller made in the podcast regarding Dassin\'s Brute Force. It is actually available in a perfectly fine Criterion DVD edition, just like Thieves\' Highway: http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=383 For an image comparison of the DVD see: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDreviews26/brute_force.htm I also found Mr. Muller\'s comment that he could \"very very easily argue that Brute Force is not a particularly good film\" extremely childish. Mr. Muller, you don\'t need to hate on a director\'s other films just to promote your personal favourite. It\'s not like Thieves\' Highway isn\'t without its problems, too - cop giving the audience a lecture & a Hollywood happy ending. Otherwise an absolutely great idea to include guests on your show and I\'m looking forward to the next show! Cheers!

Hi! Clute and Edwards, Thanks! for the \"recommendation\"...when it comes to the Dassin\'s film \"Thieves\' Highway.\" Because I just purchased the film \"Thieves\' Highway\" and now I am \"eagerly waiting\" for it to arrive on my doorsteps!...phew!...I guess my Film Noir Foundation \"card\" is \"safe!\" A TrueNoiraholic

Hi! Clute and Edwards, I just listened to your interview with author Eddie Muller (President of the Film Noir Foundation) and it was very interesting. But, I must admit that I have not watched director Jules Dassin\'s 1949 film Thieves\'Highway yet...personally, I think that I am the only member of the Film Noir Foundation... (or film noir fan period!) that have not watched the film \"Thieves Highway\" and I call myself a \"card carrying\" member of the Film Noir Foundation.(smile)...Believe me after listening to your converstion with author Eddie Muller, I plan to not only purchase the film \"Thieves\'Highway,\" but hopefully, I will be able to purchase a copy of A.I. \"Buzz\" Bezzerides\' novel \"Thieves\'Market.\" (That is if it\'s still available on the \"open\" market?) Thanks, Clute & Edwards P.S. Very nice program!(Episode 46) Great points! \"abound\" in the interview about Dassin\'s film Thieves\'Highway...by the way, author Eddie Muller also mention the film \"Thieves\'Highway\" in his book \"Dark City:The Lost World of Film Noir.\" (A really interesting critique of the film by author E. Muller in his book...)and I still don\'t own the film?!? Therefore, I think that I better \"throw\" Dassin\'s 1949 film \"Thieves\' Highway\" in my Amazon.com cart! or I may just have to turn in my card!...Just Kidding! (smile) A TrueNoiraholic
