In this premier episode, Shannon Clute and Richard Edwards discuss Jacques Tourneur's noir masterpiece "Out of the Past." They explain why it is the first film they choose for their continuing series of podcasts delving into the history of film noir. In the course of a lively discussion of this film, Clute and Edwards argue that while "Out of the Past" is not an early noir, it is nonetheless a prototype that helps the viewer define just what is film noir. I have just finished viewing ‘Out of the Past’ for the first time and loved it. It was even more enjoyable having first listened to your podcast which gave me a greater appreciation its content and style. Here is an amusing thought - the English newspapers recently reported that in Paris posters of Jacques Tati have appeared without his trademark pipe. (They are advertising a Tati retrospective). Apparently, showing posters of M Hulot with a pipe would be an infraction of the law banning advertising of alcohol or tobacco. If the same stupid rule was applied to ‘Out of the Past’ not much would be left of the film – Robert Mitchum lit up 16 times ! Keep up the good work. When is the next podcast?
